Ali-Akbar Sirjani was a prominent Iranian writer and researcher of the Persian language, recognized for his significant intellectual contributions and his steadfast advocacy for press freedom. Throughout his career, which spanned both the Pahlavi era and the Islamic Republic, he remained a dedicated voice for literary scholarship and intellectual independence. On November 27, 1994, Sirjani was killed while in the custody of security forces following a prolonged period of detention. His death was carried out via a potassium suppository, a method later identified as part of the state-sponsored political assassinations known as the Chain Murders of Iran. His loss remains a somber chapter in the history of the struggle for freedom of expression in Iran.
